SEO & Why it Matters for Your Business

SEO is an acronym thrown around a lot in the web development and content writing world. But do you know what it stands for? Search engine optimization. And even further, do you know how valuable it can be for any business owner trying to maintain an online presence?

Read on for a primer on SEO and why it matters for your business.

What is SEO?

So what exactly is SEO? Moz.com defines it as, “SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results.” In other words, search engines like Google send crawlers through websites to gather content and information. When you enter search terms into a search engine, strong SEO helps Google to know that your site has the information and content that matches with your search.

Why does it matter?

This is a very basic definition but suffice it to say that search engine optimization has the potential to make your business boom or bust online. If your website isn’t SEO-friendly, you’ll miss out on site traffic and that means you’ll also miss out on sales. But if your website is optimized to the fullest for search engines, you’ll rank higher in search results and get more time in front of the clients you’re trying to reach.

A few quick SEO Tips

  • Keywords are key. Keywords are words and phrases that are used in search engines by those who are trying to find content like yours. For example, if you own a solar energy company in Savannah, Georgia, a common search query may be “solar energy in savannah Georgia”. You’ll want to include this and other similar keywords throughout the content on your site.
  • Link-building pays. Links are also important — whether you link to external content, internal content on your own site, or another site links to your site — because these links tell search engines that your content is highly regarded and helpful for people searching for your content.
  • Load time matters. If your site has a painfully slow load time, whether it’s a server issue, or photo files are too large, etc., you may have a high bounce rate. A high bounce rate means that visitors to your site aren’t staying long — which further means they won’t interact with your content.
  • Ensure your site is accessible. Your site needs to be accessible for search engines and humans. If it’s full of large blocks of text, slow-loading elements, and minimal keywords indicating what service you offer, humans won’t find it very helpful. And neither will search engines.
